Renovating an old house can be a daunting task, especially if the property has been neglected for some time. However, with the right team and expertise, these properties can fulfil their considerable potential. West Lodge was just such a project. Al & Co. managed to transform it into a beautiful, comfortable, modern home, while preserving its innate charm and character.
West Lodge is located in beautiful parkland on the outskirts of Midhurst, West Sussex, and was originally a school built by Rother House. Al managed the entire renovation project, from obtaining planning permission, architect plans and a planning advisor all the way through to completion.
Starting with groundworks, the team made major renovations to the existing stone house, including significant additions which replicated its original classic style. They sourced stone locally that matched the original, existing, stone used in the construction and added brick Quoining.
The striking metal porch was made by local metalsmith Richard Weaver to complement the stone respectfully, and underfloor heating and an air source heat pump were installed. This brought the house firmly into the 21st century, making it more energy-efficient and eco-friendly. The bespoke front door made by local craftsman Ollie Carter is another standout feature that adds a touch of sophistication to the property.
The kitchen is often the heart of the home, and this stunning handmade kitchen was created by a highly talented local cabinet maker. It features timber windows, including a beautiful panoramic window in the kitchen living area, and stone and Herringbone wood floors complete the picture of luxury and opulence.
High-end bathrooms were fitted, and the annexe was restored and converted into an independent guest annexe with its own bathroom, kitchen, living area, and bedroom. The outside office is a converted old stable block that has been wood-clad, and provides the perfect space for working from home.
Finally, the team engaged in hard landscaping, adding paving to the property, designing pathways and other features. This ensures that West Lodge makes the most of the considerable natural beauty it exists within.
