Restoring the Pump House

The Pump House is located in South Harting on the edge of the South Downs National Park. After a fallen tree demolished the original building, Al & Co. was called in to return it to its former glory. The restoration was a challenging project that required considerable effort and expertise, as the entire structure needed to be rebuilt.

This beautiful, boxy little building is built from red brick with clay peg tiles. One of the most significant elements of the restoration was the work on the interior of the house. The wrought iron metalwork was created by local metalsmith Richard Weaver, who Al contracted to join the project. The metal well cover on the floor was also constructed by Weaver, and it became a beautiful feature of the house.

One of the other features that was added to the house was a new window. This window was constructed with the highest-quality timber, and was designed to match the original windows as closely as possible. Luckily, Al & Co. have deep experience in matching aesthetic elements with pre-existing styles – something that sets their renovations apart.

The little pump house lives on

This is not the first time that the Pump House has been restored, as it was demolished twenty years earlier by another falling tree. Interestingly, Al was actually the labourer on that job, and he took great pleasure in returning to the Pump House and ensuring that it kept its quaint and characterful identity.
